They thought the old barn was empty… But my dog discovered something that sh0cked the entire department…
The barn stood at the edge of the field, hunched under the rising sun. Its roof was caved in, the rusty hinges creaking with every contact. It seemed like nothing was there, just an abandoned relic.
I drove past that spot dozens of times on patrol, but I never stopped. Today was different. I heard an insistent barking. Persistent, steady.
“Max… what did you see?” I said, looking at the German Shepherd in the patrol car.
He was alert: tail stiff, ears forward, as if picking up on an invisible signal. It wasn’t fear. It was an insistent demand for attention.
The barking repeated itself. I told him it was empty, but Max didn’t move. He was already scratching with his paw near the old door.
Inside, it was quiet, smelling of rust and hay. Animals or strays could be hiding there, but Max paid no attention. His fur was bristling, his body tense. I approached, skirting the barn on the other side.
He had started digging under the crooked boards. He dug and dug. I knelt: the boards seemed fresh, as if they had been replaced recently. I tapped one—the sound from below was strange.
Empty. A chill ran down my spine. I looked between the boards, and what I saw completely sh0cked me…
I turned on the radio:
— “Central, Block 15… we need reinforcements immediately”…
He dug under the boards and suddenly came across something strange. At first, I thought they were old boxes or trash, but no… there were neat rows of small structures that looked like mini-greenhouses.
“What the hell…” I muttered, crouching closer.
Max growled, as if warning: it wasn’t just an old barn. Beneath the floor, someone had set up an entire mini-garden to grow… forbidden plants.
Lights, wires, small containers of plants. Everything was ready for cultivation.
I felt my heart skip a beat. I never thought a simple walk with the dog would end in such a discovery. Max seemed to be saying, “This is what I wanted to show you.”
I turned the radio back on:
“Central, block 15… they should be here now…”
